Why Spring Beats January

Why do we wait for January to give ourselves permission to reset?

It's a question worth sitting with, because most of us have never really questioned it. January arrives, we feel the pressure of the clean slate, and we either rise to meet it or we don't. And if we don't, there's a very particular kind of guilt that follows. Not just that didn't work, but I've already failed this year and it's only February.

Today I want to make the case for spring instead. Why it's actually a better starting point than January ever was, what's really behind that New Year's resolution pressure, and a simple three step reset you can start using right now. No calendar date required.

The Problem With January

Let's start with January, because I think it's worth naming what we're actually up against there. January doesn't just invite a fresh start. It demands one, on a deadline, with an audience. There's the countdown, a resolution you're supposed to announce or at least quietly commit to, and an unspoken expectation that this is the year it finally sticks. That's an enormous amount of pressure to place on one date on a calendar.

And here's the part that's worth acknowledging too. January often lands right after some of the busiest, most demanding weeks of the year. End of year wind-downs, family time, all the little logistics that come with closing one year and opening another. So the moment we're handed the clean slate, a lot of us are actually arriving a little tired rather than fresh. It's no wonder the resolution doesn't always hold. And when it slips, the guilt that follows isn't really about willpower. It's about the timing being a little off from the very start.

Spring carries none of that baggage. There's no resolution to keep or break, no audience watching to see if it sticks, no comparison to a version of yourself from twelve months ago who also tried and also stopped.

What Spring Actually Offers

What spring offers instead is something quieter and, I would say, far more powerful.

Think about what's genuinely happening around you right now. The days are stretching longer. Things that were dormant all winter are pushing back up through the soil. There's a shift in light, in temperature, in the literal energy of the world around you. And humans have been syncing themselves to that shift for as long as we've paid attention to seasons at all. This isn't a wellness industry invention. It's something we've simply forgotten to use deliberately, with intention. It's tapping into our body's innate wisdom and harnessing the energy of nature herself.

Spring has a particular energy that's different from any other season. An insistence on movement, on shedding what's no longer needed, on growth that doesn't ask permission. Winter's energy is about conserving. Spring's is about releasing and rebuilding. If you've felt a small, persistent pull toward wanting things to feel different lately, some restlessness that doesn't have an obvious cause, that's not random. That's this season doing exactly what it's designed to do.

And if you caught the last episode, you'll know I've been talking about this year specifically having an intense, restless quality of its own. Nine months of Fire Horse energy that's left a lot of us running hot without much chance to catch our breath. Put that together with spring's natural pull toward shedding and rebuilding, and what you get is a genuinely rare alignment. The exact energy this year has been missing, arriving at exactly the moment your body and the season are both already asking for it.

You Don't Have To Earn This

Knowing all of that doesn't automatically mean you'll actually take the invitation. And that gap, between intuitively knowing what we need and actually doing it, is where most of us live.

For a lot of women, there's a quiet resistance underneath it all. A sense that perhaps we haven't earned a reset. That things haven't been hard enough. That everyone else's needs should come first. So many of the women I work with feel that pull, even once they know exactly what they need. Knowing has never been the hard part.

So here's a question worth sitting with. Do you feel guilty brushing your teeth? Or going to the GP when something's not right? Of course not, because nobody's ever told you those are optional, something you have to earn first. Taking spring's invitation is no different. It doesn't need to be deserved. It's just there, the same way the season itself is just there, whether you use it or not.

The Three Step Reset

So let's actually walk through this. Three steps, genuinely doable, starting today.

The first step is to identify. Before you can reset anything, you need an honest read on where you actually stand. Not where you think you should be. Where you are. If you had to name the one area of your life that feels most depleted right now, what would it be? Sit with that for a moment. That's your genuine starting point.

The second step is to set your goals. Once you know where the gap is, get specific but small. One or two real goals, not a total life overhaul. What actually brings you joy? When do you feel most like yourself? Do you already have any non-negotiables built into your week that are quietly working? Build from what's already there rather than starting from a blank page.

The third step is to create your plan, and make it life proof. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it's the one that actually determines whether any of this sticks. A plan that only survives a calm, uneventful week isn't really a plan. So ask yourself now, before life gets in the way again the way it always does: what's going to derail this? Time? Guilt? Energy running out by 3pm? And what's your actual strategy for that? Starting smaller than feels like enough, stacking it onto something you already do, blocking the time before anything else claims it? Naming the obstacle in advance means it doesn't ambush you later.

Three steps. No January required. No resolution to keep or break.
