PMS SYMPTOMS FEELING WORSE?

Surprise!! I know that I said in the last edition of A Moment to Breathe that it was going to be November before I was back in your inbox, however a recent conversation with a client prompted me drop back in a little earlier than planned.

The conversation, broadly speaking was about hormones, their impact on mood and WHY DOES IT FEEL LIKE MY PMS SYMPTOMS ARE GETTING WORSE as I get older?

PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms can often become worse as a woman gets older or enters perimenopause due to various hormonal, physiological, and lifestyle changes.

Here are the top 5 reasons why this often is the case-

  1. Hormonal fluctuations: As a woman ages, her hormone levels, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can become more erratic and imbalanced. These hormonal changes can exacerbate PMS symptoms.

  2. Increased stress and responsibilities: As women move into their late 30’s and 40’s, they often face more responsibilities at work and home, including caregiving for children and aging parents. The additional stress and demands on their time and energy can exacerbate mood symptoms during PMS, making it harder to cope with everyday stressors.

  3. Sleep disturbances: Sleep problems are common during perimenopause, and the resulting fatigue and sleep deprivation can significantly impact mood. Women experiencing sleep disturbances may be more prone to mood-related PMS symptoms like irritability and anxiety.

  4. Psychological factors: Perimenopause can bring about psychological changes and increased susceptibility to mood disorders, making women more prone to experiencing severe mood swings and emotional symptoms during PMS.

  5. Social support: Changes in social support networks can affect emotional well-being. Women may experience shifts in their social circles, and a lack of emotional support can contribute to feelings of isolation and intensify mood symptoms during PMS.

It's important for women approaching perimenopause to be aware of the potential for increased mood symptoms during PMS and to seek support and coping strategies.
